PFAS is an acronym that stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance. These are hydrocarbons, molecules like octane or polyethylene, that have fluorine molecules substituted in place of some or all of the hydrogen atoms. For these examples, perfluoro-octane and polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE. PFAS is not a single molecule, but a class of molecules containing thousands of different synthetic compounds, and are found in many common household items.
Current scientific research suggests that exposure to certain PFAS may lead to adverse health outcomes in addition to their molecules being very stable and tending to accumulate in the environment or the human body over time, exacerbating these health effects. Current or planned legislation to restrict the manufacture and use of certain PFAS has led many manufacturers to discontinue all fluoropolymers, fluorinated fluids, and PFAS-based additive products.
