Q: How do I evaluate the best method to change my solvent without affecting process cost?
A: Most people do not want to pay more for their solvents, so how do you determine how to change? You must build a matrix and take it step by step and look at the cost of your current production. Then, evaluate how to make changes.
Q: How long will I be able to obtain affected solvents from my supplier?
A: For some sources, solvents are becoming very scarce. Some solvents are being placed on limitations or being phased out sooner than the mandates are being enforced. This is something you need to look at closely and talk with your local solvent supplier.
Q: What is the expected date when the new regulations will become law?
A: Again, if you look at the chart in the presentation, it shows you the end dates issued by the EPA and OSHA. Several of these are firm and happening as we speak.
Q: If my company elects to use solvent degreasing by choice or necessity – what solvent process do you consider best for long term future?
A: If you are using existing open top degreasers, and it’s a fairly new generation machine, you may want to change to a traditional degreaser solvent that meets all the current EHNS mandates. If you are considering for the long term, you may want to consider a vacuum degreasing solvent. These solvents are not regulated by the EPA.
